Task Manager: Your Guide to Understanding What's Slowing Your Computer

Task Manager is one of the most useful tools built into Windows — and most people barely use it. Here's how to read it and what to do with what you find.

Task Manager shows you in real time exactly what your computer is doing and what's consuming resources. Knowing how to read it turns a mystery into a diagnosis.

Opening Task Manager

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Or right-click the Taskbar and select Task Manager. Click "More details" if you see only a simple list.

The Processes tab

This shows every running process and its resource usage. Columns to watch: CPU % — consistently above 80% indicates heavy processing load or a runaway process. Memory — if total memory usage is consistently above 85% of your total RAM, adding more RAM would help. Disk % — 100% disk usage is a major performance problem, often indicating an HDD struggling with demands, malware, or Windows Update running in the background.

100% disk usage — the most common cause of slowness

This is extremely common on laptops with traditional spinning hard drives. The fix is almost always an SSD upgrade. Other causes include a failing drive (urgent — back up immediately), malware, or Windows Search indexing (can be disabled temporarily).

The Performance tab

Shows real-time graphs for CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network. The Memory graph shows how much RAM is in use and how much is available. If the "In Use" consistently approaches the total, more RAM would help.
