A laptop that won't start is alarming, but it's worth working through some basic checks before concluding there's a serious problem. Many "won't start" cases are actually quite simple fixes.
Basic checks first
Power supply
Is the charger plugged in firmly at both ends? Try a different power outlet. Look for the charging indicator light โ is it showing? Try removing the battery (if removable), holding the power button for 30 seconds with battery out, then reconnecting and trying again. This drains residual power and can fix unresponsive machines.
Screen, not power
If the laptop powers on (you can hear the fan and see drive activity lights) but the screen is black, it may be a display problem rather than a power problem. Try connecting an external monitor via HDMI. If the external monitor shows the desktop, the problem is your screen or its cable.
Indicator lights
Check what LED indicators are doing. A solid power light with a black screen is different from no lights at all. Many laptops show specific blink patterns that indicate particular hardware failures โ check your laptop's manual or manufacturer website.
If the laptop starts but won't load Windows
Windows Startup Repair
If Windows starts loading but fails, you should eventually see a "Startup Repair" option. Let this run โ it can fix corrupted boot files automatically.
Safe Mode
Hold F8 during boot (or hold Shift while clicking Restart) to access Safe Mode. If the laptop works in Safe Mode but not normally, a driver or software is causing the issue โ not hardware.
When to call a professional
If none of the above helps, it's time for professional diagnosis. Common hardware causes include a failed power jack (very common โ where the charger plugs in), failed RAM, a corrupt Windows installation, or in serious cases, a motherboard fault.
