Trackpad problems range from the cursor jumping randomly to the pad being completely unresponsive. Here's how to diagnose and fix the most common issues.
Is it accidentally disabled?
Many laptops have a keyboard shortcut to disable the trackpad (often Fn + F7 or similar, with a trackpad icon). Check whether you've accidentally pressed this. Also check in Settings โ Bluetooth & Devices โ Touchpad that it's enabled.
Driver issues
Corrupted or outdated trackpad drivers cause erratic behaviour, including phantom clicks, jumpy cursor, and unresponsive gestures. In Device Manager, find your touchpad (under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices), right-click it, and select Update Driver. If that doesn't help, uninstall the driver and restart โ Windows will reinstall it fresh.
Palm rejection
If the cursor jumps when you're typing, check the palm rejection settings. Most modern trackpads have palm rejection algorithms that can be tuned in trackpad settings.
Physical issues
If the trackpad clicks but doesn't track, or doesn't click at all, it may be a hardware problem. A swollen battery beneath the trackpad can physically prevent clicking. Liquid damage can cause erratic behaviour that worsens over time. These need professional assessment.
