Children today are growing up in a digital world that simply didn't exist when their parents were young. Navigating online safety requires a blend of technical tools and ongoing conversation.
Technical tools
Windows Family Safety
Microsoft's free Family Safety feature lets you set screen time limits, approve app and game downloads, see activity reports, and filter inappropriate websites. Set it up through a Microsoft Family account at account.microsoft.com/family.
Router-level filtering
BT, Sky, and Virgin Media all offer free content filters at the router level โ meaning they block inappropriate content on every device on your network, including phones, tablets, and gaming consoles. Enable these in your broadband account settings.
YouTube Kids and Safe Search
YouTube Kids is a separate app with curated content for children. In regular YouTube and Google, enable Safe Search and Restricted Mode. These aren't perfect but significantly reduce exposure to inappropriate content.
Conversations matter more than controls
Technical controls can be circumvented by determined teenagers, and they don't exist on friends' devices. The most effective protection is regular, open conversation about what your child is doing online, who they're talking to, and what to do if something makes them uncomfortable.
