How to Spring Clean Your Computer (and Why You Should)

Just like your home, your computer benefits from a regular clean — both physically and digitally. Here's a complete guide to getting everything running at its best.

Most people never think about maintaining their computer until something goes wrong. But a few hours of maintenance each year can dramatically extend the life of your machine and keep it running quickly. Here's a complete guide.

Physical cleaning

Cleaning the vents and fan

Dust builds up inside laptop vents and on the fan over time, acting as insulation and causing the system to overheat. Overheating causes slowdowns (thermal throttling), crashes, and eventually component damage. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the vents every 6–12 months. Point the can into the vents and blast short bursts. You'll be surprised how much dust comes out.

Cleaning the keyboard and screen

Use a dry microfibre cloth for the screen. For stubborn marks, very slightly dampen it — never spray liquid directly on the screen. For the keyboard, compressed air between the keys removes crumbs and debris. Isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud cleans sticky keys.

⚠️ Never useWindow cleaner, household spray cleaner, paper towels, or excessive moisture near any laptop component. These cause damage.

Digital cleaning

Clear out startup programmes

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Startup tab, and disable any programmes you don't need to start automatically. This directly speeds up boot time.

Run Disk Cleanup

Search for "Disk Cleanup" in Windows, select your C: drive, and let it scan. Then click "Clean up system files" for even more space. Temporary files, old Windows Update files, and Recycle Bin contents can easily free up several gigabytes.

Uninstall unused programmes

Go to Settings → Apps. Sort by "Last used" or "Size". Remove anything you no longer use. Bloatware and trial software are common culprits for background resource usage.

Update everything

Run Windows Update. Update your browser. Check for updates in any other software you use regularly. Updates patch security vulnerabilities and often improve performance.

Run a malware scan

Open Windows Security and run a Full Scan. Schedule this to run automatically monthly.
